How many Wordle words are there?

• There are 2,309 words that can serve as potential Wordle solutions.
• Originally, the game included 2,315 words in its dictionary, but after being acquired by The New York Times, six words were removed due to being offensive, outdated, or using non-US spelling.
• The complete Wordle database contains 12,966 words, allowing players to choose from an additional dictionary of 10,657 words that can help narrow down the answer.
• During the game’s development, Palak Shah, the creator’s partner, was responsible for selecting the list of solutions from five-letter words in the English language.
• Some of the less familiar words in this list include BORAX, ECLAT, FUGUE, POLYP, and SUMAC.
• The most common letter in the Wordle dictionary is “E.” If “E” is absent from a word, 45.60% of all guesses will be incorrect.

What are the most common letters among Wordle words?

There is a notable difference in letter frequency between general 5-letter words and those eligible for Wordle.

For instance, “S” is the most common letter in all 5-letter words, making up 10.28% of the letters. However, in the list of 2,309 Wordle solutions, “S” appears in only 5.79% of the letters, which is 44% less than its overall frequency in 5-letter words.

Understanding these variations is crucial for selecting the most effective starting words in Wordle. To aid in this, we will examine letter frequency in both general 5-letter words and Wordle-specific words.

Knowing which letters are most common in Wordle solutions can help you strategize your first guess. We have analyzed all 2,309 Wordle words, and the following letters are the most frequent among Wordle answers:

• In Wordle, the letter “E” appears in 1,053 out of 2,309 possible solutions, which means 45.6% of all Wordle words contain the letter “E.” Including “E” in your initial guess is a strategic move.
• The letter “A” is the second most common, found in 906 (39.2%) of Wordle words. Following “A,” the letter “R” is the third most frequent, appearing in 835 (36.2%) of the solutions.
• After “E,” “A,” and “R,” the next most common letters in Wordle solutions are “O,” which appears in 672 words (29.1%), and “T,” present in 667 words (28.9%).

Most common starting letters in 5-letter words for Wordle

• In Wordle, the letter “S” is the most common starting letter, appearing at the beginning of 15.81% of Wordle-eligible words.
• This means that, on average, every 6th Wordle solution begins with “S.” In contrast, “S” accounts for 12.06% of the first letters in all 5-letter words.
• Following “S,” the letter “C” starts 8.58% of Wordle words, “B” starts 7.49%, and “T” starts 6.45%.
• The top five starting letters in Wordle are rounded out by “P,” which begins 6.11% of the words. Along with “A,” which starts 6.06% of Wordle words, these six letters account for over 50% of all Wordle solutions.
• Notably, none of the 3,309 words included in Wordle begin with the letter “X.”

• In 5-letter words, the most common 2-letter combination is “CO,” which appears in 220 such words.
• It is followed by “MA” (193 words), “RE” (187 words), “ST” (183 words), and “BO,” “PA,” and “CA.” These combinations collectively make up over 10% of the starting pairs in 5-letter words.
• For Wordle solutions specifically, “ST” is the most frequent starting pair, appearing in 2.82% of all Wordle words.

Most common ending letters in 5-letter words for Wordle

• In Wordle, 18.28% of eligible words end with the letter “E,” making it the most common final letter.
• This means that nearly one in five Wordle solutions concludes with “E.”
• The second most common ending letter is “Y,” which appears at the end of 15.76% of Wordle words. The letter “T” is the final letter in approximately 10.96% of Wordle words, while “R” concludes 9.18% of the words.
• Together, these four letters—E, Y, T, and R—account for more than 54% of all Wordle word endings.
• Notably, there are no Wordle words that end with the letters “V,” “Q,” or “J.”

• In 5-letter words, the most common 2-letter ending combination is “ES,” appearing at the end of 5.60% of such words.

How many Wordle solutions end in the letter “S”?

New players might try to find four-letter words and then make them plural, but it’s important to note that Wordle’s dictionary does not include plurals. Therefore, the letter “S” only appears as the final letter in non-plural Wordle solutions.

In total, 36 Wordle solutions end with the letter “S,” and none of these are plural words. Out of these, 21 end with “SS.”

Recommended Wordle follow-up guesses
